These are some ideas expressed by Richard Bowie, Chief Pharmacist of AHMEN after reading the article by Blessings International. See article on front page of this web page.
I am making the changes from Amoxicillin 500 to 250 mg (bid) [little bit more expensive but better compliance, I think] and dropping the girl thingyl cream in place of Diflucan. [cheaper, easy to carry and better compliance]. Need to check on the cost of Albenazole as to Mebendazole in Honduras. Possible switch to Albenazole for one dose treatment. Cost in USA is extremely high. Azithromycin is generic and cheaper than it was but still too high except for severe cases. I have added it to the request list from the Hospital. I will also add Clarithromycin (Biaxin), but generic is still pretty expensive as compared to others. Use as secondary treatment. I do suspect that we may see resistance before long. The Tinidazole is not available from any source that I can find, so I guess will stay with the Metronidazole unless someone can get the Tinidazole and cheaper. Ask others to add their comments. Richard
