Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We’re in the process of planning the extended eyecare program for next year. You can participate on several levels: 1. Purchasing just readers and sunglasses (approximately 55 -75 cents each with a minimum order of 300 pairs each) 2. Purchasing readers, sunglasses, and prescription eyewear.
Prescription eyewear can be made in the field using the instant eyewear (approximately $13/pair) , ordering the glasses made in the U.S. and sent back down by the next team headed in the same direction (about $6.80 a pair), and/or accessing the computerized inventory of used glasses from **Kendall Optometry Ministry (around 30 cents apiece after an initial investment of $2000 or so).
We’ll be in Nicaragua until February 24 and since we need to order materials early, we’d like to finalize things as soon as possible thereafter . Please let us know if you would like to participate and at what level, and we’ll get back in touch with you.
ALSO,
We will be having an eye care workshop at the Methodist Center on the Birmingham Southern Campus on April 26 from 9:00 until 4:00. We will be reviewing techniques for eye examinations and offer hands on training using the tonometer, focometer, autorefractor, and trial lens set. To help our patients who have astigmatism, we will practice using cylindrical lenses as well as calculating the spherical equivalent.
Everyone interested in reviewing these techniques (we all forget a lot during the year) and sharing words of wisdom on what does and doesn’t work is encouraged to come. There will be no charge other than $5 or so for lunch. Please let us know if you or any of your team members plan to come so we can be sure to have enough food and instruction materials.
GOD BLESS,
Mary Guffey
