Why sponsor a young person in Honduras
I recently asked some of the youth in shalom and in the woodworking school why they were there. Here are some of their responses.
I am here because my mom leaves me alone and she goes out with other men. 15 y.o. Girl in the 9th grade
I am here because my mom’s husband is making advances to me. He follows me everywhere, so I just stay in my house all day. 14 y.o. Girl in 9th grade
I am here because I want to live with my sister here at Shalom. Our mom is not here in Honduras and we were separated from each other. I was living in many
Other houses. We want to stay together. 16 y.o. 8th grade
My parents and I want to say thanks to whoever are giving me the opportunity to those of us who are interested in learning a new trade. With the help of a sponsor, I’m willing to put my strength and effort in learning woodwork
Boy: 15 y.o.
I’m sending this letter to let you know that I’ll only be studying wood working only. I hope to have your help. I will see how well I’ll do this year and maybe continue nest years if I can get a sponsor. Then I may go back to middle school. I hope to do well in all my studies
Boy 14 you.
All of these young people have left their families, friends, and villages to try for a better life.
Each one needs a sponsor to do this. There getting a sponsor allows them to live in a safe environment, receive food, clothing, school supplies, education, and instruction from healthy adults.
What does it take to help them? A commitment from someone for a regular monthly stipend. How much? That is up to the individual. With this commitment from their sponsor, you will receive the name and can set up a relationship with the young person.
