I have been told we can get a container (20 foot) in mid November if we can work out everything. According to Sandy we should consider about $4,000 to cover all the costs of shipping and receiving. Add another $1,600 for the container and $400 misc. thus we are looking at a total cost of $6,000.
Scott Starr (LHOH Director) is checking on shipping from Norfolk, VA and Wilmington, NC. Also Stop Hunger Now will arrange shipping (at our cost) so we do not need to involve your people in Alabama. We just need to cover the costs. Jerry Brunson told me he left money with Eleanor to re-open the soup kitchen at the dump. Maybe they could use some of this money to help pay for the shipment costs and then receive the appropriate amount of food from the shipment. I have also talked with Jerry Brunson about helping to fund this.
A 20 foot container will have 660 boxes of food - each box with 36 bags of the rice/soy mix of which all that is needed is to add water to have a fully nourishing meal. Each box weights says it weighs 33 pounds - but I am sure that includes the weight of the box also. Total weight then would be 21,780 pounds. Once again this is more than just rice - it is a full meal with a rice/soy base. The children at Leonarda's liked it; I and others tasted it and found it to be appetizing. LHOH would use 100 boxes - leaving 560 for others use. SHN indicates that each bag will feed 6 children. We find at the orphanage that it does not go that far, but we have a large number of growing boys and they are accustomed to being fed well. It may very well feed 6 children or more who usually do not have full meals. Thus at 6 children per bag a box will feed 216 children (under 5 cents per meal).
Based upon the estimated shipping costs, the cost of a box of food will be a little over $9 per box. Actual cost will vary depending upon the total costs for shipping and receiving the container.
I believe LHOH would be willing to up-front the costs if they were reimbursed by others within the next few months. LHOH would need commitments from others to do so as they cannot be in the position of not recovering costs for this transportation. I would think to have a commitment to pay now with money being paid by the end of January would be OK. Of course, earlier payment would be better.
Sandy tells me it will take a month to make the arrangements in Honduras to receive the food. Thus we need to act quickly to have commitments for the payment of the food.
Let me know what you think. We must move quickly if we are to accept this shipment this year. We would then look for the next shipment in the June time frame and a third next fall if we are using the food. Subsequent shipments should be less costly as we will likely not buy the container.
